At the entrance to the party, play a well known sports anthem such as the theme from Chariots of Fire, the Olympics, “We Are the Champions” (Queen) or Rocky.

If going for the traditional balloons and streamers, you might consider choosing the colors of the guest of honors favorite sports team(s).

Get your hand on as many different TV sets that you can and place them around your party/facility/event. On each of the sets, play a different sports video or DVD. Some possible selections to choose from might include famous sports plays (check your local video store or library for a collection of these) as well as inspirational sports themed movies (such as Remember the Titans, Rudy and Hoosiers.) However, for a real fun time, get your hands on some of the bloopers and spills DVDs from different sporting events. It’s not hard to find a collection on DVD (again, check your local library and video store.) These can be light hearted and sure to ‘loosen up your crowd’ for a good time. The great part about this is that you don’t even need to have the volume on (in fact, especially for adult parties where the guests will probably more enjoy their conversations more than the videos…)!

Disguise your invitations to look like event tickets to a big sporting event. In this way, it will be easy to put in the date, time and location (being sure to include your party location as the hosting ‘stadium.’)

For fun invitations, either through Oriental Trading Company or your local dollar store, buy a bunch of plastic blow-up sports balls (similar to beach balls, but in the shapes of other sports balls such as basketballs and baseballs.) With a sharpie market, write the instructions on them. These can either be blown up before delivery, or deflated and allowed to be blown up by your guests when they receive them. It definitely sets a fun mood from the start!

Sports medals can be made yourself by taping red/white/blue striped ribbon (or other colors if they’ll match your theme better) to a chocolate gold coin. The winners will love to win the medal…and love to EAT them, too!

After each game, award medals to the first, second and third place winners. Using upside down totes and small boxes, create a three tiered stage for each to winner to stand on. Cover the three with some blue or black fabric. Remember, the one in the middle is the highest, the one on the left is the second highest on the one on the right (facing the winners) is on the lowest. Award each their medal around their necks while they stand on their boxes. This makes for great pictures as well!

If you have two different teams competing, and one team is clearly way ahead, don’t announce the total score until the end. You also might consider offering more points for later competitions to even the score.

Know any kids who are cheerleaders? (Not just high school…) Invite them to come during the sports activities (dressed in their uniform) to cheer on the players with some real cheers!

During the sports activities, have someone videotaping the games. At the conclusion to the party, play back the games for the guests to watch while they are waiting for their parents to arrive (unless, of course, the guests ARE the parents…) If enough activities were played, you might also consider putting together a collection of the ‘great plays’ and ‘spills’ that occurred as well. These make great gifts to accompany thank you cards…or to act as the actual Thank You cards themselves!

Ask around to friends and neighbors to see if you know anyone who referees a sport. If you find someone, ask if you can borrow their referee shirt. This is a GREAT thing to wear as the host/hostess of the party. To finish the look, walk around carrying a clipboard and a whistle.

Sports posters make GREAT party decorations AND prizes for games or gifts to give to your guests when they exit your party! Here are a couple online resources that offer posters at reasonable rates:
